The Various Methods Involved In Turban Wrapping

By Margarita Joseph

The turban is more common among the Muslim people and is put on by all. It is basically made up of long pieces of cloth and is usually worn on the head. However, this is not to say that other people do not adorn the turban. Far from that thought, the Hindu community also wear them when attending certain occasions. Furthermore there are some Christian communities that have adopted turban wrapping among their activities.

Similar to other ordinary clothes, turbans vary in color, shapes and sizes. They are not just worn like any ordinary clothing however. Most of those who put them on say it is a representation of their undivided commitment to a higher consciousness of their own. Moreover, it singles them out from the other millions of other people.

Patience is a virtue right? Well you will need it when tying this piece of cloth. To put the strands of cloth into what you see people wearing takes some time, and therefore a little perseverance comes in handy. There are several styles wrapping up the clothing.

Among the various styles is the Double Wide style, common among Indian men that hail from Punjab. To wrap in this style you will need a long piece of cloth, divided into two identical parts and sew them together forming a wider cloth. It is from there that the wrapping is done on the head.

The Warrior style is yet another method which can be used. As the name suggests, it is meant to be worn by the Sikhs as they go into battle. This style does not require any specific measurements of the piece of clothing and also any color can be used. Basically, a knot is tied at the end to hold it on the head in the beginning. As easy as it may sound, this style can be hectic because one must get the shape correct which might take 5-10 tries.

Among these methods is common technique used to tie the head-dress. This is quite a usual way of doing the wrapping. At this point, one needs some clothing that has been previously starched, and make sure it is very long. It goes with a patka that is worn underneath the turban to prevent it from falling, and is commonly worn by the Sikh too.

Also making it in the list of methods that can be used is the House style. Women wear it when they get up from bed and while going on with their daily chores. They also wear the 3 meter turban when exercising. Men on their part go for the shorter ones with 1.5-2 meter lengths. The lengths for men depend on their individual tastes; whether to put one or more wraps. Children, on their part, adorn them at home while playing outside or even just moving around the house.

To sum it all up, there are these among many other methods of turban wrapping. The only difference is the wearer and his personal taste, religion, status, age, purpose, time, place just to name but a few. Color is also determined by these factors.
