The Increasing Popularity Of Abstract Watercolor Painting

By Kerri Stout

The medium of watercolor is traditionally used to paint realistic images. However, its fluidity and luminescent qualities have encouraged many artists to create abstracts too. Abstract watercolor painting allows creativity to be stretched to its limits and experimentation is often part of the process. Expression ranges from the fluid to the more geometric and and figurative abstractions are also depicted and it is quite hard to define as so many different styles fall under this umbrella.

Classical artists were required to faithfully represent their subject matter. However, abstract art almost defies definition. It is sometimes defined as the exact opposite of exact representation or realism. Subject matter varies considerably and includes concepts, ideas and the workings of the subconscious mind. It is more important to use colors, lines and forms to express a subject than to represent it realistically.

There are many famous artists of the past who embraced abstraction. These artists all had a passion to communicate something that could not be expressed by traditional means. An early pioneer, Kandinsky, experimented with shapes, symbols and colors. He was followed much later by Mark Rothko and Jason Pollock with their huge canvases. Abstract artists usually begin with a subject, concept or idea in their minds and they ways in which they express these defy strict definition.

The challenge of the artist is to create work powerful enough to move the emotions of the viewer, rather than provide a clear image. Shape, size, color, line and form all contribute to the overall impression. In the best paintings of this nature, intensive technical processes intersect with emotional expression to evoke strong feelings in the viewer. Every element, including brush strokes and color, are used deliberately.

It is important for artists using watercolors to understand their medium. They have to understand how the water, paint and paper work together. Just as one cannot compose music without knowing the notes, certain basic techniques have to be mastered before composing paintings. Techniques like layering and working with washes are just two techniques that are important.

Today, many classes are offered by experts and courses can even be taken online. It is easy to master the basics and amateur artists have more opportunities than ever before. Many people prefer to have a teacher with years of experience who can help them to grow. The fact that so many people have access to learn these techniques, means that more and more of them are able to express their creativity in this way.

However, at the same time, there are many talented artists coming to the fore and many of them are displaying their work online. This makes it possible for many art lovers to purchase work that appeals to them. The great variety available means that most people can find something to suit their taste without necessarily having to spend a fortune.

The popularity of watercolors has grown steadily over the years and this trend is not likely to change. More and more artists, particularly those who are producing abstract paintings, are choosing to work with them. They offer the opportunity to experiment with many different techniques, papers, colors and styles. Their fluidity and the way they capture light offer many creative options.
