Elements In Modest Islamic Clothing

By Dorothy Walker

Islam is the second most popular religion and the most practiced culture in the world. Just like any other religions and cultures, it has its own rules in the way its member way of clothing. This practice varies in different subgroups. Some are very strict with both female and male attires whereas others are more concerned with women than men. Detailed below are facts about modest Islamic clothing that one should consider.

Men are supposed to check on haram practices. Anything against their teaching is regarded as haram. Men, in particular, are required to avoid silvers and silk which are meant to be worn by females as decorations. Their underneath attires should be done tailored above their ankles. Having them at that position indicates their humility since they will not be easily soiled. It is believed one who intends to soil their clothing does this out of pride knowing they have different garments to change to.

Wearing is not meant to flaunt and imitate others. Muslim brothers must wear simple clothing which does not exhibit their wealth or does not undermine others. Even so, they are expected not to imitate others be it, women or non-Muslim fellows. It is thought that their imitation of non-Islam might simply coerce them into believing and adopting their values.

Women, on the other hand, are required to cover their whole body expect from their face and hands. The respective hijab should not be transparent. In some subgroups, they are strictly made to wear black clothing made out of a heavy material. In others, they have the freedom to choose any color as long it is not transparent and is loose enough.

Their head dress varies with different groups. Traditional groups make use of the niqab and the burka. A niqab is a head cover which exposes the eyes whereas a burka completely covers the head and the woman can only see through grills or mesh set above the eyes. Modern Muslims have simplified this to a simple head scarf which exposes their face. A chador, on the other hand, is an extended cloak covering the head but exposing their face altogether.

Ladies underneath clothing can go as far as their ankles and can make a preference to any other suitable apparel. They should not expose their bodies to Muslim brothers without any close ties. Otherwise, they can put on other outfits to their brothers or any other male relatives. Children who are not way below their puberty stage do not pose any threat.

All the same, these regulations have changed depending on western countries laws. Most have banned the use of niqabs and burkas since they conceal faces which they expect them to be exposed for security purpose. Others have intermarried with other cultures although it is greatly discouraged but have managed to adopt into new ideologies as well.

There has been a remarkable change in the way Muslim believers blend into the modern world. Some factions have adopted casual wears using a diverse fashion for their identity and women have adopted a mixture of loose tops and trousers followed by a hijab to fit into the modern world. Their traditional attire is worn during important ceremonies altogether.
