In the English language the term tatua means to mark. The art of tattooing has been present in many cultures around the world for several centuries. APT sets guidelines relating to prevention of transmission of blood borne infections and how materials should be disposed. The guidelines also relate to sterilization of hands devices used in the process and cleaning of hands. The guidelines ensure safety for tattooists and clients through wearing of safety gear and disinfection of surfaces among other procedures.

Prior to beginning the job, APT guideline stipulates the customer must sign a waiver. The waiver states that the tattooing is performed with their consent and that they are above 18 years. It further states that the customer understands that the tattoo being etched is permanent. The waiver also states that open wounds will be left at the end of the exercise.

After the waiver has been signed, the tattooist performs a visual inspection on the body of the client to ensure that it is free from scrapes and cuts. This is done to ensure that the design appears as clear as possible and that cannot happen if the skin has cuts and other marks. The location is then sprayed with an antiseptic. Antiseptic is meant to kill germs and to minimize the possibility of infection during or after the process.

Equipment for cutting hair is then used to shave the location clean. Hair must be removed completely because they prevent the ink from being impregnated well. Blades used for shaving must be disposed to avoid contamination.
