The Sculptor And The Bronze Art Foundry

By Kelli Evans

The sculptor and bronze art foundry specialist are in a relationship that is similar to the relationship between a film director and his actors and crew members. There is a process of artistic creation in each case and it is the outcome of direction in which various talents are aligned.

Like other genres sculpture can require team work. An artist starts with imagination, having a concept of something that could be true though it is not until it is executed in elemental materials a real forms. In order to realize his artistic concept he needs the practical skills of specialist technicians.

Birds may be said to sculpt and so do ants and other insects. They create marvelous forms and shapes out of mud, grass and various materials. What makes human sculpture different is that it is not made entirely for practical purposes but also as a means of abstract expression. Statues and forms are symbols of things like beauty and identity.

Some sculptors work with hard materials like rock or marble. They reduce a block of stone to a shape with form, texture and unique dimensions. The use chisels, hammers and abrasives. Others do the same but use soft materials like clay or plasticine to build a mold which is then covered with a metal alloy.

Alloys are created by the combinations of metals such as copper and tin. Other elements such as arsenic and zinc are sometimes used. Such elements are rust proof and sufficiently malleable to cover artists' molds. The amount of detail that is preserved from the original work depends to a large extent on the expertise of the foundry technicians.

A bronze art foundry has played its part in many great works through the centuries. Contemporary techniques and procedures are still improving but are based on the practices of ancient times. This gives this form of art a sort of historical continuity that adds to the mystique of the genre. Works are not only the outcome of an individual's unique vision but also a manifestation of artistic collaboration.
