What You Should Know About A Presidential Campaign

By Randi Boyer

The title given to the individual who leads, or presides over others is a president. This individual may be in charge of an organization, union, company, university, club or country. Those who have this leadership position within a country are given that position by citizens who vote. Ahead of the voting process, candidates participate in what is classified as a presidential campaign.

Political campaigns are similar to presidential ones in that they both serve the same purpose of impacting how and what decisions are made by a specific group. In these situations, the group being influenced are people who have been registered to vote within a country. In democratic countries, the practice is known as an electoral campaign. Overall, high profile campaigns are reserved for races for prime minister, head of state, president or head of government.

In this process, the message plays a crucial role. This includes the main ideas that candidates want to tell to voters. Typically it includes multiple talking points that relate to relevant issues and government policies. The points serve as a summary to the main theme of the campaign and are reiterated through the full process. This is a technique used to create an impression with voters.

Fundraising is done to earn money for these campaigns. Many times, candidates will meet or phone with large donors, send pleas via mail to small donors and work side-by-side with interest groups likely to contribute a lot of money if it is in their best interest. The money raised gives candidates the chance to travel, fund advertisements and carry out other similar duties.

Political consultants is the title given to the individuals who handle advisement and management of the overall campaign. It is these professionals who overlook the key elements of the process and what the candidate is doing. They also handle field strategy, research and other crucial duties. Voter research, candidates research and opposition research are common tasks. Activists mostly operate as volunteers and provide aid in canvassing, phone calls and generally spreading the word about the candidate.

There are a lot of different practices that may be performed in order to gain voters. Advertising used in these situations is modeled after commercial advertising and even propaganda. Laws have been established that put restrictions on the various avenues that can be used in order to distribute these political messages to the general public.

Because of this, there is a lot of reliance on a candidate and its team of professionals and helpers who must be creative and thorough in their work. Every strategy used should consider the goal, message, resources and audience. Rallies, merchandise, endorsements, tours, parties, microtargeting, and leaflets are just some examples of popular strategies applied in these situations.

In America, a presidential campaign comes before the primary elections. The primaries are the time in which the big parties select nominees to represent the part for that position. Those nominees will also choose a candidate for vice president in the event that they take the office. Following the elections, nominees will be active in debates, campaigning around the country, ads, and other duties that correlate with getting voters and making a positive and lasting impression.
