Features To Look For In The Skill Of Quality Oil Painting Reproductions

By Peter Pham

Many don't know how much skill it takes to create excellent oil painting reproductions. Exceptional perception of details is needed to create good work, along with an intense knowledge of an epoch. The artist requires understanding of the painter he is reproducing, with his unique methods and colors.

Furthermore, the painter needs an excellent knowledge of oil painting. Oil paint tends to shrink and form cracks if it is painted from the first layer in thick paint. An artist must paint thin layers first and only begin thicker layers after that to prevent these unsightly cracks.

Layers are used in painting to create certain colors and effects. Reproduction is not as simple as painting a single layer and mixing the correct shades. One needs to understand what effects one shade painted over another will create.

The artist must know how to combine oils in thick strokes and washes. In renaissance art in particular, this combination is seen to produce realism. The ability to recreate such realism is rare indeed.

Matching exact shades is no easy task either. Oil paint changes color slightly when dry. Achieving precision needs an intuitive understanding of the nature of oils to ape exact shades along with much experience.

Every artist uses very different kinds of brush work so a thorough knowledge of every style is required. In impressionism, there's not much flat color, for example. Instead, every brush stroke is visible. These need to be intricately recreated to produce a credible piece. It requires much patience on the painter's part.

Some paintings have an indefinable quality. The way the Mona Lisa's eyes seem to follow one is an example of this. Nobody can point out exactly how the effect is achieved, yet the reproducer is expected to replicate it. Only real talent is capable of this.

Texture reproductions are extremely important for realistic pieces. Anything from rich velvet to glowing glass exists in an image and these are created in photo-realistic style. Replicating these demands enormous skill and talent.

When one is acquiring a replica of historical work, these are all aspects that must be taken into account. Only superior vendors supply works that include all the qualities listed above. Quality also involves a piece that lasts without cracking or dulling.

Of course, you will also have to take care of your piece. Hang it out of direct sunlight to maintain color integrity. If the work is painted on paper, keep it away from damp.

When seeking a vendor, it's best to look at the actual paintings rather than pictures of them. Often a photograph can improve the look of a piece dramatically. With the introduction of image enhancing software, the picture may even have been manipulated to improve it.

The web is an excellent source of vendors. Everyone is able to hang a beautiful painting in their home. Oil painting reproductions are the affordable way to display art.
