Ninety Six - Clown Halloween Costumes: Big Shoes, Pratfalls and Evil Chuckles

By Jack Jaden

If you want variety to choose from it's hard to beat versatile keyword. From silly makeup to the scary leer of an evil clown mask you create your clown as you choose. Many of us have fond memories of clowns from our childhood as silly funny characters with big noses and bigger shoes. Others prefer the evil clowns created by Hollywood.

No matter what tone you choose for your disguise you'll need a few basic supplies for your clown Halloween costume. To keep it simple, borrow a shirt and pair of pants from your largest sized friend or family member, find suspenders in a loud color and a disreputable hat. Add some greasepaint for your face and perhaps a pair of gloves. If you want to add more, visit a costume shop for some oversized shoes and a trick necktie that squirts water.

The tone of your costume refers to the style or character you portray through the look. This can be easily altered with the addition of some color of a few props. What makes clown Halloween costumes so versatile is the generally unsettling view of a childhood figure turned into something terrifying and dangerous. When something child friendly is warped and twisted slightly, the effect can be more terrifying than anything we expect to be frightening.

If your choice of tone is happy and carefree you would choose clown Halloween costume supplies that are brightly colored, baggy and silly looking. You might have a droopy flower hanging from your hat or carry a burp cushion to sit on. Most children will recognize this as a happy clown for birthday parties or on visits to the circus. However, even some happy-face clowns can seem frightening to very young children.

Scary evil clown Halloween costumes can include the same components, but with an added twist. Splash on some fake blood to make them wonder what Bozo was doing behind the circus tent. Add a prop and even the friendliest clown look will have the children in tears. Weapon props are a good choice, a long machete (think Friday the 13th) or a meat cleaver. Go further and add a severed head (I assume I do not have to reiterate the "fake" here). Even the most minor of additions can completely shift the tone of your look.

If using clown make up you can use as much or as little as you want. For full face paint, use a base color such as white and build on that with other colors around the eyes, on cheeks and for the comical big red mouth. If you are applying bright hues over a base white foundation, it's best to provide a clean edge with a black grease pencil. Good quality make up can be stored from year to year.

A clown mask is a good alternative to those who have no desire to get paint all over their face, or if anyone is concerned about allergies to face paint. The only downside to using a mask is once you choose the style you like, you are stuck with it for all future uses. If you are a one Halloween per mask kind of celebrator, then this will not be a problem. However, if you like to get extra mileage out of what you buy, you may reconsider the face paint.

Create a clown Halloween costume that is uniquely you. Plan the look you want to achieve and go for it. Get your supplies together, choose the clothes you'll wear, draw a simple design for face paint or buy a mask. Clowns can be hilarious, devious, sad, or threatening - there is no right or wrong clown Halloween costume. Turn yourself into a clown and have some fun. Edited by Svetchey Sanorols
