"Twenty years have passed since the Prime Evils were defeated and banished from the world of Sanctuary. Now, you must return to where it all began - the town of Tristram - and investigate rumors of a fallen star, for this is the first sign of evil's rebirth, and an omen that the End Times have begun."
This is the story of Diablo III, a first-person action role-playing video game released by Blizzard Entertainment in mid-2012. Setting a new record for the fastest-selling PC game ever, with over 3.5 million copies sold in the first 24 hours, Diablo III will also soon be available for PlayStation 3 (out now) and PlayStation 4 (set to launch in late 2013). Considered to fit within the "dungeon crawl" and "hack and slash" genres of video games, Diablo III was also the highest selling PC game last year, selling more than 12 million copies in 2012.
Set some 20 years after the events of the last game, Diablo III is set in Sanctuary, the dark fantasy world of the entire Diablo series. There are certain changes within Diablo III that differentiate it from the first two, including characters and setting. Diablo III has five character classes (one of which is brand new), including the Barbarian, Demon Hunter, Monk, Wizard and Witch Doctor. All seem to be revamped from past characters or fashioned out of characters from the previous games, and the characters tend to get stronger with newer and better skills. Also a new feature of the characters, Diablo III allows you to choose the gender of which ever character you pick, whereas previous genders have been fixed.
Diablo III introduces a newly designed, custom 3D game engine. This gives even familiar gamers a new type of game play, and encourages a development in skill, as enemies are able to utilize the 3D environment as well, often times scaling walls and showing up into the combat area unexpectedly. One other distinct change is that of the auction houses. Unlike before, Diablo III features two different auction houses, one where players spend in-game gold that has been collected, and another where players can buy or sell virtual items using real-world money. Skill runes, new to Diablo III, are skill modifiers that are unlocked as players level up, and the assigning and swapping of skills has been much more modernized and streamlined in the newest version of release as well.
Although critics and gamers received Diablo III quite well overall (and the 87.77% ranking on GameRankings) there is one major area of criticism. Due to strong digital rights management demands, this version of the game demands that you have an active internet connection at all times, which renders offline single-player mode game playing impossible.
