Advantages Of Calligraphy Designs In Writing

By Katrina Wheeler

Calligraphy designs, originally refers to lettering that is done in single strokes, using a calligraphic writing instrument, such as a modem, brush or pen-traditional. Calligraphic lettering refers to typographic art that is formed by drawing the letter forms in outline. However, lettering and calligraphy may be used to mean the same thing, especially where lettering is done in calligraphic style, and is flowing.

Different western styles employ similar tools and designing techniques, but differ by characters set and stylistic preferences. Modern techniques comprise a wide variety of items that range from fine art products to functional arts. Skilled calligraphers always practice either non-classical hand lettering or classical calligraphic art.

Calligraphic products are mainly used in religious art, wedding and even invitations, memorial documents, graphic design, announcements, topography, and cut stone inscriptions. It is also used in moving images in television and images, testimonials, maps, death and birth certificates, anniversary cards, and all works that require artistic forms of writing. Charters awarded by state officers and monarchs in various countries in the world also employ use of artistic writing.

A round-nibbed pen or a flat-balled pen, and a brush are the principal tool required by any calligrapher. The pens used vary depending on the decorative to be done. Some require steel brushes while others require pens that have more than one nib. Ballpoint and felt-tip pens can also be used despite their works not employing angled lines. Less viscous ink that is mainly watery is used for printing.

The paper used for printing should have good consistency of porosity so as to produce cleaner lines. Vellum or parchment is normally used for printing purposes. A light box is also necessary in order for lines to pass through the paper whereas a knife is required for erasing the work. Light boxes and templates are also required in producing straight horizontal or vertical lines without any detraction on the work that may arise from pencil markings.

Western calligraphic practice is recognized by use of Latin scripts. The Latin alphabet was invented in Rome, and by the second century, it developed into Roman imperial capitals that were carved on stones. As writing withdrew to monasteries, a new uncial script was discovered for copying the Bible and many other religious texts. Monasteries helped in preserving calligraphic traditions during the fourth and fifth centuries, when Europe entered the dark ages and the Roman Empire fell.

The shape, size, hair type, and stretch of brush, water density and density of the ink are the main physical parameters that can influence the final result either directly or indirectly. The quantity of ink and water the calligrapher permits the brush to take also determine the final result. Bolder or thinner strokes also depend on the pressure applied on the brush, the direction the brush is given, and the angle of inclination of the brush. Before a calligrapher starts creating a detailed and systematic plan, he must study the text and decide on the lettering styles to be used, the spacing of lines, the weight and texture of the letters, and margins and paragraphs.

Calligraphy designs give form to signs in a harmonious, skillful and an expensive manner. It ensures the thoughts are as important as the way they are presented. The beautiful impression created by these arts motivates many individuals to learn and develop the necessary skills that eventually help them develop their own styles.
