Fun Card Games For Families

By Beryl Dalton

At the speed of which things move in the world today, it can be a real task to get the family together to spend some quality time. Technology alone can make it difficult to get the family together at any one time to do something that is a throwback to a time before it existed. That being said, there are many card games for families to enjoy and help with bonding as well.

Go Fish is a classic game with cards that everyone is sure to enjoy. It is best played with three to six players. If there are less than four players, each player is dealt seven cards. However, for more than four players, each player gets five cards.

The remainder of the cards gets put into a pile known as the 'pond'. This is the pile from which players will draw cards over the course of the game if necessary. The aim of the game is to collect the most sets of four. Each player takes a turn in asking another player for a specific card to help them make a set. If they don't have the required card, the asker is told to 'Go Fish', which means they have to take a card from the pile.

Another easy but fun card game is Memory. Other names for this game are Concentration and Pairs. As all names suggest, players must take turns to try and picking matching pairs of cards. The cards are placed face down in a random order.

If the pair picked does not match, they must be returned to their positions face down. The next player plays. If someone picks a matching pair of cards, they keep the pair and have another go. The one with the most pairs wins.

A game for a much bigger group of people is UNO. There are lots of cards in this special deck, which isn't like a regular pack. The UNO deck features cards with different numbers, colors and symbols which allow for different game strategies. Everyone gets 7 cards and the remainder are put in a pile, with a starter card facing up to begin the game.

The starter card is what dictates what the first player should play. They have to match the card's number or color, or if they cannot do this, they can take one from the pile and let the next person play. A player can also use one of several special cards to change the play order or even dictate the color to play next. It is quite easy once players get the hang of it, but it also becomes very strategic.

These kinds of games are just a few of many that can help the family spend quality time together. It is also a great way to show the children of today how much there is to be had without remote controls, keyboards or joysticks. They are also perfect to play on long trips or when the lights go out and it's necessary to pass the time away!
