Find Great Ballet Schools In Ottawa

By Helen Scott

The capital of Canada is called Ottawa. It is a very cosmopolitan city and full of culture. It is a very clean and safe city with an excellent standard of living and not a lot of people that are unemployed. Being a center for Canada's culture, this city nurtures many different branches of creative's, with one of its most popular and beautiful creative branches being the dance form of ballet. Over the last century many ballet schools in Ottawa have been established and many good dancers have come out of them.

This form of dance in Canada has been around for a long time and is very highly thought of. Its origins can be traced back to the renaissance courts in Italy in the 15th century where it was a performance dance. Years later it evolved into a concert dance that became widespread in France first then Russia. It is a globally recognized art today and had been very influential in other forms of dance.

In the Canadian context, this dance was only popularized in the mid 20th century. The French introduced it when they still had a stake in Canada's affairs. However lessons were expensive and teachers were few so only the rich could afford it. The 1930's were the decade that it took off in Canada and real good teachers with passion emerged.

These teachers were foreigners that had danced in the dance capitals of the world of that time, namely France and Russia. Thanks to these teachers for the first time Canada has professional dancers coming out of it. However no dance companies had been formed yet. So the students that were taught by the masters of the 1930's left to greener pastures and came back well respected and started the first great dance companies in Canada.

An interesting question to pose to ourselves is that why has this dance been so influential all over the world? One of the possible reasons for this is that it is a raw form of expression. Whether you want to express a musical piece visually, or tell an epic story through movement this dance form can do it. Another reason for its popularity could also be how it reaches across all ages and genders, all creeds and races and people find common ground in appreciating its beauty.

Although it is wonderful to look at, it is not an easy life. Dance classes in Canada's capital city are hard on the dancers bodies. They often have to start dancing when they are very young and carry on well into adulthood. This physical and mental conditioning turns them into the beautiful dancers we see today.

A dancer's body is often put through the wringer. The exercises that are required and are repeated, often damage muscles and cause injuries. Bone deformation can also happen from the uncomfortable positions they have to put their feet in. Taking up dance is definitely not a light decision to make.

Although the life of a professional dancer is a difficult one, it is all worth it when one gets to dance in a well known production, fame and fortune may follow. Expressing emotion through movement is one of humanities purest forms of communication. The dancers that Canada's capital city produces have been communicating these stories for over 85 years, and they are only getting better.
