How Play Therapy Can Help Your Child

By David Burns

Children have all sorts of issues that parents need to look at. This can have something to do with their emotions, such as anxiety, or their behavior. These days, play therapy has become very successful in treating a lot of emotional and behavioral problems that kids are suffering from.

Children enjoy playing, so this becomes fun, and kids will look forward to therapy. There is a lot that a therapist in Camarrillo, CA can tell by the way a child is working with certain materials. This is also a way in which kids are able to work with their feelings, both on an emotional and a behavioral level.

There is a consultation with the parents in Camirrillo, CA beforehand. They will tell the therapist a little bit about their child. This may be something to do with their temper tantrums or their learning problems. However, once the child is handed over, a connection is established and they are ensured that this is private. This gives them a sense of confidence.

They may find that they are less anxious, the more they participate in these sessions. It is perfect for the child who has a lot of problems managing their anger. Parents may send their child to this type of therapy when they are having a lot of tantrums or where they feel that this has something to do with their sleeping patterns.

The connection that is established especially relates to the child who has been abused and does not want to trust anyone in their life. By playing with various materials, they will slowly start to build a connection with the therapist. Obviously this is a slow process, but the therapist is trained to be patient and they will start to see how a unique relationship can be formed.

During the initial consultation, the therapist will just get to know the child. They will ask them a couple of questions in order to make them feel as if they are in a safe environment. They may try and connect with them verbally. They will then progress to the method of play, letting the child play with anything that does not bring him or her any harm during the session.

As the sessions progress, the therapist will start to see how the child uses certain materials and methods. They will then be able to read more into this and analyze what is going on. They will then be able to to connect more and slowly build a relationship. Of course, one has to be patient during this time, depending on what the problem is.

Eventually, the therapy will come to an end. However, this should be a gradual process, otherwise the child will think that they have been rejected. This especially relates to to the child who has been neglected in the past. At the time of termination, the therapist should talk to both the child as well as the parents. This will happen only once they are sure that the child is ready to move on.
