The Role Of Artists And Illustrators In The Production Of Animation Films

By Timothy Olson

Man has been fascinated ever since he started producing art. Man has been able to produce quality work with the use of tools such as paint brushes or pencils. The two categories of professionals named above on the topic do similar tasks as their jobs are about drawing. The distinguishing factor is on the material used as an output. This article basically elucidates on how Artists and Illustrators are valuable in the production of Animation Films.

On the output level, art work is mostly portrayed on canvas material while drawing based illustrations are portrayed visual media through presentations, magazines or comic books. The use of illustration basically involves creation, demonstration as well as practice of their original work. This is the main difference between the two forms of professionals.

Illustrations as well as art are significant when producing animated films. First of all, artists provide a platform for the creation of characters that depict the subject matter of a narrative. This involves creating various aspects of a fictional character such as size, gender or specific body features such as shape of nose, mouth or eyes. Meanwhile, illustrators use the drawn characters in sync with a logical story to make it much easier for the audience to comprehend.

Production of art also involves creation of scenery that accompanies the characters. Illustration on the other hand adopts the use of emotions that give a vivid description of what these characters are experiencing at a particular moment. Illustrations capture emotions such as happiness, sadness, sorrow as well as anger. Creation of emotions within character helps the audience realize that the characters feel emotions just as humans hence end up sympathizing with them . This creates a bond between such characters and the audience which further increases the chance so the audience liking the character.

In addition to creation of emotions, illustrations also serve the role of creating sounds as well as voices as characters are expected to speak or produce sounds during various parts of the animation film. For example, an illustrator will adopt the use of deeper voices when male characters speak . This is to emphasize their dominance. Meanwhile, female characters adopt a softer voice to emphasize female qualities. Illustrations also adopt the use of sounds to describe emotions being experienced by these characters at various scenes within the film. Characters that are in a happy mood are played a happy tune while a sad tune is played during a sad scene.

The role of an artist goes much further as they are responsible for creation of every detail that accompanies a character, however minute it may be. For instance, if the character wears particular attire, then they should be captured.

It is important that directors are notified during production phase concerning the movement of characters as per the illustrations. If the characters are performing specific acts such as running, then they should be captured so as not to contradict with the original story.

Art work and illustrations play a significant role as described from the above excerpt. They provide a basis for the creation of animation films from the original characters. Their inputs as well as opinions are vital to the success of any animation film. As such, their input should be incorporated when producing the film to ensure it does not become a failure.
