The Need For Photography In Performing Arts Competitions In Michigan

By Mark Stone

Traditionally slides have been a requirement for entering art competitions; however, more and more organizers are now accepting digital entries. Whether you email the digital image as an attachment, burn it onto a CD or print your image of the artwork depends on your skills to do this and the terms and conditions of the art competition. Digital entries are quite important in performing arts competitions in Michigan.

The dictionary definition of art criticism is that it is the discussion or evaluation of visual art, which is certainly a fundamental part of what it means. The first writer who can be described as an art critic is La Font de Saint-Yenne who in 1737 wrote an entertaining text with added anti-monarchist rhetoric about Paris art salons at that time.

Art is often a very ambiguous phenomenon, making explanation and discussion a valuable tool in understanding more about it. Furthermore, a specific work of art generally demands awareness of past art movements and works, and a sense of what is currently happening in the art world. For this reason, art criticism is sometimes a necessary and useful help in understanding art.

At the same time, because many people find it useful in these ways, criticism can have enormous power to educate and influence the opinions of those who are exposed to it. That is why each critic must observe unwritten rules to ensure responsible criticism, the best list for which is probably the one made up by the great Russian scientist and writer Mikhail Lomonosov. According to Lomonosov, critics must do following:

What individuals who take photos of their own craft may not understand is the lighting conditions influence the shade of your photo. Much the same as the old film cameras, shooting pictures with an advanced camera utilizing glowing lights will turn your photo more orange. Utilizing glaring lights can turn the photos greenish. Shooting outside when the sky is cloudy can make a somewhat blue tint, so take a gander at your photos nearly before entering them.

Allow plenty of time to organize yourself so that you have your photo of your entry ready to go well before the closing date of the art competition. If you leave it to the day before guaranteed this will be when you run into computer problems, loose power, or have unexpected visitors!

Though the focus has been turned away just a bit it is still all about the practitioner. Participating in a martial arts competition will take everything you have learned up to the point where you now stand. Your self-control, endurance, patience, camaraderie, discipline, sportsmanship, integrity and so much more is all laid out on the line. Strive to conduct yourself in the best way possible..

Art critics must understand the responsibility that they bear and be careful about what they are writing. From the other side, readers must always evaluate what was written and give thought to it, not simply accept what they read. Maybe a way to do this would be to read criticism only after visiting an exhibition? But then you might miss out on information that would have made your visit more enjoyable.
