Surrealism, a movement that founded their art on writing and visual art, was established during the 1920s. The creativity and imagination of this movement were wild, captivating and interesting. So many surrealist artists MI has have created great interest in the movement. However, it is wise to know the origin of surrealism.

Surrealism is built on wild imagination. It is mainly based on the subconscious as well as the conscious. However, the movement was greatly influenced by Dadaism, which was also another great movement. A dream specialist and a philosopher were artistes that influenced this movement. Therefore, surrealists adopted the model of thought of these people.

Secondly, surrealism has Dadaism roots. Dadaism is a movement that was founded many decades ago. However, unlike the Dadaism movement, the imagination of the surrealist movement was inspired by the urban life. Also, surrealism stressed their creativity on positivity, unlike Dadaism which entirely used negative expressions.

It took some time before surrealism took up visual artistry. When the movement was founded, they stressed on the freedom of mind. They thus emphasized automation. Automatic writing is when one writes freely without any hindrance. Therefore, the movement had a great fear that visual artistry would wash away their imaginative writing techniques.

This movement founded several techniques in visual artistry. One of the methods is called frottage. This involved placing a paper on a texture that is grained then rubbing it using crayons or pencils. Grattage is another technique that involves rubbing pigment on a canvas lying on top of another surface that is grained.

This movement became political due to the effect of Andre Breton, a poet. This poet was very radical and had a hope of freeing the ordinary person from societal rationalism. Within no time, the movement adopted the skepticism of the poet as it had similar views. It, therefore, ended up becoming dependent on Andre Bretons political views.

Another fact is that surrealism was accused of being sexist. This is because the group photos did not feature female artistes like Lee Miller and Leonora Carrington. This made the female artistes to experiment with cross-dressing. Some of the members also ingrained sexism in their art because they depicted women as monstrous in their art. This made some women to represent themselves as animals or mythical creatures.

The movement separated during the Second World War. Many members run to the United States of America due to fear of persecution. However, the artistes continued to be creative, and their works are appreciated by most people today. Thus, any upcoming artiste must be ready to learn the history of surrealism if he/she wishes to adopt this kind of art.
