There Are Benefits For Everyone Through The Power Of Art

By Crystal Salazar

Making connections in our world is crucial to learning and understanding emotions. The power of art reaches out to people in a variety of ways because each person feels differently when they experience the creation. What each person gets out of it is determined by what has made up their past. It is freeing in a way that nothing else is.

Art helps children to deal with emotions, which they might not otherwise be able to. If something upsetting happens in a young child's life and they cannot verbalize, it can be detrimental to their development. Through the use of crayons, paints and paper a small child can express what is bothering them in a way they may not have previously considered.

If a person is having challenges expressing his or her feelings in words art can reach them when other methods cannot. Creative emotional release takes on a new and fresh way of thinking outside of the box. Getting the feelings out of a person and down on paper can assist the person and their doctor to understand what is going on inside. It is cathartic in a uniquely effective way.

Studies have shown that youth who are exposed to this sort of program have a greater chance at getting their emotions out. Children need alternate ways to be able to express their thoughts when the world gets harsh. If children do not have this outlet, they may turn to other things to ease their pain like drugs and alcohol.

When a crime happens, the victims are often so traumatized that they cannot get their emotions out on their own. If there is not an alternate way a person can work through their feelings then they are left to fester and destroy. These feelings can cause one to lash out at others, themselves or society creating an epic magnitude of problems.

And now, due to budget cuts and recession art programs are being cut at the very time that they might serve society the most. The loss of these programs takes a way a valuable outlet that kids need desperately during times of stress. Truthfully, art can transform and heal in a way that no other medium does.

It is also a great idea for rest homes to have art programs. When someone has been placed in a home for the elderly, it is akin to reverting. They are dependent on others for their basic care. Because of this, the elderly many times feel just as helpless as the youth. Art does the same kind of healing for the elderly.

Art is an inexpensive way for people of all ages to express themselves. The cost of taking art programs from schools is much greater than the cost of paying for them. There is nothing that compares to the power of art in assisting people of all ages to get their emotions out. Who knows, the next Picasso, Dali or Rembrandt might just be waiting inside for the encouragement to come out.
