General Information Regarding Aerial Silk

By Andrea Davidson

Aerial silk refers to a type of performance art. It might also be referred to as aerial contortion or acrobatics. During these performances, one or many artists will engage in aerobatic acrobatics. All of the positions that are done are carried out while hanging from a special fabric known as the silk.

Performers start by climbing up on the fabric, which is attached and hanging low. Most people do not use safety equipment or lines and so it is crucial that they are properly trained and skilled so that they can stay safe while performing. Fabric is used to swing, fall, spiral, suspend and wrap the body in numerous positions. On silks, performers might do various poses and figures while in the air. Some use dried rosin or spray on the feet and hands to help with grip and to increase friction levels.

The fabrics that are used in this regime are strong but flexible and give. The width of the silks will range and is often dependent on the routine being done and the acrobat. Typically these are long enough so that rigging can be done, which is hanging of hammocks and silks. The material utilized is typically polyester lycra. Usually it includes some amount of stretch. It can be low, which is more common for beginners, or medium, which is often used by professionals.

A major part of these performances is doing special tricks. The categories that these tricks are placed in includes wraps, climbs and drops. Climbs will vary. They may be practical, efficient, elegant or athletic. Straddle and French climbs are examples of some popular choices.

Wraps refers to static poses that are done when an aerialist wraps silk around various parts of the body. Usually the more complex the wrap, the stronger the amount of friction there is and the less power that is required to hold oneself up. When it comes to drops, the performers wrap up high in the silks and then fall down into lower positions. This kind of trick requires the most skill, strength and control. It is also one of the most risky.

Performers who do this act are strong and flexible. It takes hours of practice to truly master the art form and become skilled. Strength, power, flexibility and courage are some traits expected of aerialists.

Many of the people involved in this are also part of entertainment groups, including circuses. Some might be involved with companies that are usually hired to provide entertainment at special events, such as carnivals, weddings, large parties or weddings. The cost of booking such acts will differ and are usually relevant to the event, company, acrobat or performance.
