Doomsday Preppers: The Strategy of Tim Ralston

By Terrance Franklin

There are lots of details which can be said about Tim Ralston. Inventor of the crovel. The prepper version of Alec Baldwin. And eventually, the very first man to come under the line of fire during the recording of doomsday preppers.

1. Electromagnetic Pulse

In previous blog posts, I have stated that I had my questions regarding the importance of an EMP attack from a solar flare. After carrying out some more investigation on EMPs caused by tactical nukes I have been forced to revisit the risk of this type of situation. More on this in a future article.

2. The crovel

I am not about to lie, I want one of these things. It's possible that Tim as well as his friends took a page of of the Deadliest Warrior playbook in bringing out that dead pig however was I astounded. Probably the most interesting thing about the crovel is the fact that it combines numerous useful resources into one. I was thinking about buying a regular issue e-tool but with the added features of the crovel it is a no brainer.

This was a fantastic example of prepper entrepreneurship. While we prepare for the toughest, it is excellent to notice people like Tim who are able to take advantage of the existing structure in the economic climate to help others out making a little money on the side. A few might be put off by his lack of focus however after the day, if he has extra resources he can prepare better, might be get a jacuzzi in his underground bunker.

3. Bug out bunker

This was actually interesting for a variety of causes. First of all, we are revisiting the concept of shipping containers for the second time in 3 episodes. I didn't realize they were as inexpensive as $2500. And in addition, they work as a fully practical Faraday cage, insulating from the potential EMP attack! Our pal David Sarti would love to hear about that.

A main matter which wasn't tackled on the program was the complicated nature of getting circulating air within an underground bunker, specially with no electrical power. Being actually 6 feet deep is as grim as it seems, without air one is basically in a tomb. HVAC units are drastically aided by fans to get air in and out. It will get quite uncomfortable at best, and alarmingly high in CO2 at worst to count on passive air supply. Maybe Tim could outfit a solar generator or some other renewable source to power his ventilation.

4. Bug out method

Overall Tim's technique is significantly in line for what the truth will be for urban preppers. He is wisely avoiding stockpiling food in his home location. Even though it wasn't described on the program I am sure someone of his intelligence is planning to keep food stores in his bug out area. The only issues with this are the confined area in his underground shelter, and the hard terrain with which to forage food nearby.

Something that was nice to find out in the show was how risk-free his children felt. As preppers, some of us take a lot of fire (as they say) for involving children in our life styles, but the words of Tim's sons are evidence that it can be great. To children aware about how outrageous the entire world can really be it can be comforting to understand someone has a strategy.
