The Causes Of The Sepoy Mutiny Of 1857

By Alexandra Anderson

The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 is known to be one of the bloodiest rebellions that has ever happened in India. Although many people died in the process, this event has also been one of the most significant happenings in the country. Without this mutiny, the people of India would not have found the courage to be able to rebel against their colonizers and demand for their independence.

Long before the mutiny, Britain had already established itself a great and advanced country with a lot of resources. Because of this, they wanted to get out of their comfort zone, and add more territories to their already big land. One of the lands that they conquered and really concentrated their colonization on was none other that India. It was their goal to spread their culture and manner to these so called savages of Asia.

When India was finally a colony of England, the British East India Company was founded. This program created an army of native Indian soldiers who were tasked to keep the peace in India. These troops who were known as the Sepoys, were under the command of Great Britain and were taught how to fight in both armed and unarmed combat.

Now, there were many times that these Sepoys wanted to rebel against the European soldiers but failed. The reason for these small rebellions were because the colonization had affected their life a lot. They basically wanted freedom and simply could not take having foreigners rule them.

Of course the number of freedom fighters increased throughout time until the big army of Sepoys launched a massive attack against the European forces. The one event that sparked the anger of the natives was when the military commanded them to use rifles that had grease inside the cartridges. Now if one were to reload his rifle, then he would need to bite out a part of cartridge in order to make it work. The problem was that the grease was said to be made of either pig or cow fat which totally offended the Hindu and Muslim soldiers.

The Indians of the higher class used this as an opportunity to make the people want their own freedom again. Another cause of a big blood bath was because the upper class hated the way the Europeans interfered with the traditions of India. So when combined, the Sepoys and the people really gave the Europeans a big battle.

The people who were fighting for freedom, began slaughtering Europeans as they walked all the way to Delhi in order to place Bahadur Shah as the true leader. Everywhere they went, they killed Europeans whether they were men, women, or even children. During the whole duration, they were said to have killed approximately two hundred people.

It took months before the British were able to stop the Indian forces. When they did, all of those who were involved were either beheaded or hung on the gallows. Now although the Indians failed in trying to stop their colonizers, this event did serve as an inspiration to freedom fighters that would appear in the future. The significance of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 was to bring about the patriotic spirit of Indians in the country.
