Reasons Why Contemporary Sculptors Like Bronze

By Bertha Wells

Contemporary sculptors use many different materials but bronze seems to be their favorite. Everywhere you go in the world, you can find this sort of artwork decorating buildings, parks and streets. People across the globe recognize the importance of art and its role in sharing the deeper meaning of life. Statues have been used as much to inspire people as to mark the impact that has already been made on society by great leaders.

Cities spend a significant amount of money on pieces that are implemented by different artists. Some of these works take years to be completed, while others are available for viewing in a relatively short period of time. Since artists are paid as much for the level of fame they have achieved as the quality of their work, it is possible for towns to get art that will increase significantly in value as time goes by, thereby earning a significant sum for the municipality that owns it.

These sculptures center on different themes and take various forms. The artists sometimes opt for images that are easy to recognize, such as waterfalls, animals, the planets or human beings. Others are entirely abstract and as they are developed around a particular idea, the shape is adapted to match it. This is why there are so many shapes and sizes available everywhere.

Alloys made with bronze have a special quality. They grow bigger when they are heated. That means whenever they fill a mold, they do so completely, entering all the pockets and spaces that are present. This makes it possible for artisans to implement fine details in their work. They can even copy the fine lines in a worn leather jacket.

When bronze cools, it contracts. As part of the process of producing a sculpture, molten metal is poured into a vessel. It then has to be removed from this container. This task would prove to be very difficult if the metal did not shrink away from the surface of the mold as it cooled.

Contemporary sculptors also enjoy working with this material for another reason. The alloy is completely ductile. The fact that it stretches easily makes it suitable for birds in flight, athletes in motion and a wide range of other action figures. It forms curves and arcs well and is not brittle.

Numerous sculptures from ancient times have been lost or stolen. This is due to the immense value and versatility of bronze. It can be shaped into almost anything, including ammunition and kitchen tools. The same features that make it a favorite among artists also put the work of these talented individuals in danger.

Nowadays, contemporary sculptors utilize a range of other materials when they want to create a work of art. Ceramics, glass and even lighting materials are used to do things that artists in the past could not. However bronze still rules them all. No one will shy away from praising this material, even if it is not their only medium.
