Calling All Family Members For A Classic Portrait

By Don Wong

With the love and support of our family, doing things seem easier. They help make holiday celebrations more fun, and they provide comfort when we go through hard times. But there are things that seem more hard to do if they are all around, and taking a family picture is one of those things. It may be fun if everyone is present, but they also make up the most boisterous of crowds, making it hard for a photographer to shoot their picture as a group. It's not advisable to skip it though, since a family portrait is deemed a priceless heirloom that can be passed on from one generation to the next.

In taking a family photo, the secret is to plan thoroughly, especially if you have a large family. Some aunts or uncles might be unable to attend on short notice so you would have to inform them ahead of time. If the head of the family, usually the grandparents, is having a birthday or anniversary celebration, it's best to hold the photo session on the same day and venue so there's a good chance that everybody will be there. Everyone would have made time for the party, and it is also possibly that they're in a jovial mood.

For a Classic family portrait, ask everyone to dress in their best dress or suit. You can also ask them for ideas for a themed portrait photography. Maybe you can all don national costumes or dress in a particular colour. Although there are no rules on what the family should put on during their portrait photo shoot, many families choose to dress in coordinated clothes to show their unity as a family. Furthermore, dressing up in costume can be exciting for the whole family.

Family portraits can be shot in a photographer's studio or just about anywhere else, but remember that seniors and the young ones will be there in the photo shoot so it's imperative to make the setting comfortable for everybody. Hold the photo session before doing any activity so everybody still looks fresh in the picture.

Even though everyone is dressed in similar outfit or is told to smile at the same time, the personality of the family members will still emerge in the photo. So don't fret if some members didn't smile as flawlessly as the others or simply didn't smile in the portrait. After all, a family portrait is perfect when everyone's individuality comes out.
