Music has evolved through the ages since it was first enjoyed thousands of years ago it has now reached the point where every decade or so what's popular changes and entirely new types of music are created. We're going to take a look at what are presently some of the most popular types of modern music around.
One of the most popular genres of music today, is known as house music. It revolves around a heavy background beat overcut with samples, sounds and very often vocals. It has its roots in Chicago, USA and moved to Europe in the 1980s where it was adopted and reworked into the kind of house music we hear today. Some of the most popular house producers are based in Europe and it has become so revered that thousands flock to destinations such as Ibiza to see house DJs perform. There are many kinds of house, each type appeals to a different demographic; funky house for instance is more popular among 30-somethings and electro house, with it's strange samples seems to have gained notoriety among teens and those in their twenties.
However mainstream house has become, it has yet to take over from what still remains the most popular genre - adequately named Pop music. Pop simply stands for popular and is most commonly attributed to boybands and girlbands and is music written for every demographic. Nowadays particularly, pop music has become bridged with other genres, meaning that whatever is 'pop' at the time will be pop on the radio. It is regarded perhaps as easy-listening, something for the masses to hear and enjoy, not very often offensive and therefore very often top of the charts.
Perhaps the modern opposite to pop music for most people, classical music has stood the test of time, and while not heard on mainstream radio stations, it is widely appreciated and critically acclaimed. The interesting thing about classical music is the camaraderie between the conductor and his orchestra, each instrument works together on such a scale that it is often regarded as the most emotionally-captivating genre out there. The names of Beethoven and Bach will stand the test of time and be remembered over many modern artists.
As a stark contrast to classical electro music is also well known and has it's own following. Out of the mainstream and with a more specific crowd electro music is based in rhythm and comes from funk samples and the use of TR-808 drum machines, making a heavy and unique sound. There is much distortion in the sound too and rarely any vocals.
Something these forums could never argue about is rock music. Rock is rock, characterised by the guitar. It takes influence from blues music, country, metal and acoustic and a lot of the time, all these influences are used together. Rock music came from the blues originally which itself came from the black community in the old Deep South. It is seen as angry by some, but the versatility of the guitar means it's capable of being something quite beautiful. The haunting sound of the acoustic guitar is unrivalled and the passion and talent it takes to play the electric guitar well is why bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who are still touring today. The old ways are the best ways!
