I have been deeply involved in the rock and roll community for about two decades now. It's always been a giant part of my life and it has given me so much fulfillment that I have been able to build a career around reviewing the music that I love so much. All of this time that I have spent watching live shows has given me a huge insight into the fashions and trends amongst the youth, and the biggest trend going now are cool tee shirts.
I think the whole cool t-shirts craze is built around the fact that it is so absolutely uncool to wear the shirt of the band you're seeing. It seems to completely contradict the actual feelings of the crowd, because why even go see the band play if you're not a fan? Not only that, but kids are still buying band shirts from the merch booth. That can only mean that it is cool to wear the shirt everywhere but at the actual concert.
The really upsetting thing is how hard these youngsters are striving to be the one wearing the coolest t-shirts in the room. The attitude doesn't even make sense to me that they would even care to participate in such a frivolous activity. Doesn't that go completely against the tenets of what rocking and rolling is all about? Be your own person and rebel, rebel, rebel?
This behavior isn't anything insanely new, by any means. When I was as young as these kids today, I was a social chameleon. I wanted to fit in so badly that I would change my style completely depending on what kind of show I was seeing. I could shift from punk rocker to mellow hippy in no time flat. I'm sure I would have succumbed to these cool t-shirts too if they had been popular.
I grew up and learned the error of my ways, just like most people do. I'm sure many of these kids will outgrow the need to have the best cool t-shirts available too in their own time. What I do wonder is if they will spend their adult years looking at the kids of their time and judging them as harshly as I have judged them.
